UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Selects Accordent AMMS to Manage Video-Based Cancer Treatment Content

System Enables North Carolina Medical Community to Benefit From Up-to-the-Minute Cancer Research Findings

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., – February 16, 2010 – The University of North Carolina Lineburger Comprehensive Cancer Center has selected Accordent to provide a statewide online multimedia communications platform that will enable researchers and doctors in North Carolina to rapidly share evolving strategies for treating cancer.

As one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers nationwide, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center treats cancer patients, conducts research into the causes of cancer and searches for new treatments, develops and directs statewide programs in cancer prevention, and trains future physicians, nurses, scientists and public health professionals.

The Center’s more than 285 faculty members provide multidisciplinary programs for most cancers, giving patients the benefit of many medical specialists in one place, and offer more than 160 clinical trials of the latest treatments developed at UNC or available through affiliation with national clinical trials groups.

Visual communications technology is core to the Center’s approach; medical experts leverage a statewide TANDBERG video conferencing network for telemedicine applications and to capture Grand Rounds and Tumor Board reviews to extend the benefits of the latest cancer research findings, or research expertise, with doctors and patients at even the most remote locales.

The Center selected the Accordent Media Management System™ (AMMS) for its ability to integrate with the TANDBERG network and provide a central, searchable destination where doctors can locate relevant content. Via seamless integration with the TANDBERG Content Server (TCS) – a network appliance that records video conferences – the AMMS ingests archived files, re-publishes them to a custom-branded portal as traceable streaming video presentations, and assigns them to pre-set content categories in the portal. Researchers and doctors use their secure ID to log in and watch presentations that they are authorized to view.

“We have already captured more than 230 hours of content that can be used for patient care, Continuing Medical Education and telemedicine,” said Michael Young, Director of Telemedicine for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “We are also looking forward to tapping the multi-tenant capabilities in AMMS v3 to create public portals to support the Center’s holistic view of patient care – such as sites for pediatric oncology, or for teen patients to help them understand the resources and care available to them. We’ve only just begun to tap the system’s potential,” he said.
